In ancient times, herbalists wrote about the uses of St. Johns Wort as a balm for wounds, burns (after cooling the burn first with soap and water) and insect bites.

It has been asserted that a Marigold flower (Calendula), rubbed on the affected part, is an admirable remedy for the pain and swelling caused by the sting of a wasp or bee. (Also excellent for cuts, ant bites, or any itchiness. Great for ecema too). Lotion made from the flowers is most useful for sprains and wounds, and a water distilled from them is good for inflamed and sore eyes.
